Security is the major topic nowadays in I.T.
Orange Crystal Consulting stays on top of security issues by reviewing regular bulletins posted by security firms. These bulletins come in the form of Advisories by federally funded watchdog organizations such as CERT as well as the various anti-virus vendors such as Panda.
We understand physical security of systems must be one of your company's top priorities. Without physical security, all efforts to harden computers, servers and firewall devices are pointless. We will stress physical security of your systems to you at all times and work with you on a plan.
First let's talk about what happens to systems that are NOT secure. We have seen plenty of these in the field as we service the residential sector. Computers that have been compromised are truly not in the control of the owner. Rampant spyware, viruses and trojan horses have been seen and evaluated/analyzed first-hand many times. The malware has been researched by our programmers in-depth. Viral code has been analyzed to see what function calls are being made.
We have spent hundreds of hours trying to cleanse hosts of infections. Although some anti-virus and anti-spyware companies can do a good job of ridding a host of malware, computer scientists know that once a machine is compromised it cannot be trusted.
Orange Crystal Consulting takes the difficult stance on this subject and insists on machine rebuilds in the case of infection. If a customer does not wish to do a rebuild, a disclaimer must be signed absolving our company of responsibility for the machine's integrity. This tough position is due in part to our direct observation of spyware 'coming back' after it has been cleaned. It is common knowledge that adware can be VERY TOUGH to get rid of.
Next we shall discuss firewalling. We have a specialist, Mr. Durwin Babb who is an expert in configuring hardware firewalls. We were very impressed with his ability to walk into a company and configure a firewall he had never seen before. We are committed to hardware firewalling because we know the havoc that software firewalls can wreak on a PC. We don't appreciate all the alerts that the user is faced with on a day-to-day basis.
Regarding software firewalling, we are committed to the Zonelabs product ZoneAlarm Pro. While we know it is driving some users mad, we also believe it to be one of the best firewalls on the market. We know this because we have not seen it affect the stability of the Operating System and we have seen other products which we have had to reinstall a few times. We strive to keep all of our clients happy.
